Builder websites love to lead with safe photos. A nice entrance monument, a walking trail, maybe a pond. All fine, all important, but none of those things sell your homes. Your homes sell your homes.
And yet, on so many community pages, the actual interior photos are missing, buried, or shown too late. That's a problem. Most users won't stick around long enough to go looking for them. If nothing grabs their attention immediately, they leave. No click to floor plans, no click to available homes, no lead.
Your First 5 Photos Matter More Than the Other 50
Research suggests people form an opinion about a website in as little as 0.05 seconds, before they’ve read a headline or clicked a button. That means your photos are doing more of the selling than you think.
When someone lands on a community page, they're asking one simple question: Can I see myself living here? Your job is to answer that as fast as possible. Not with a monument sign. Not with a stock photo of people riding bikes. With your best product.
Your first five images should be your strongest.
Show me:
- The kitchen that makes people stop scrolling
- The living room with natural light pouring in
- The primary suite that feels like a retreat
- The exterior with real curb appeal
- The feature that makes this home different from the one down the street
This is your first impression, so treat it like one. Everything else can come later.
Stop Walking Me Through the Home Like It's 2010
When users click into a floor plan or an available home listing, I still see galleries that start at the front door and work room by room, like a virtual tour.
Exterior. Entry. Hallway. Laundry room. Secondary bedroom.
No one is getting excited about the laundry room.
This approach made sense when photography was limited. It doesn't make sense anymore. Today, you likely have dozens, if not hundreds, of images. Use them strategically. Start with the wow. Show the best kitchen first. Show the best living space. Show the feature that makes this home worth clicking on.
Once I'm interested, then you can walk me through the rest. Attention first, details second.
Your Photo Library Is One of Your Most Valuable Marketing Assets
Builders who invest in photography and keep it organized win long term. Those images don't just help one home; they help every home. When your gallery is organized by floor plan and room type, you create an arsenal you can reuse everywhere:
- New communities
- Homes under construction
- Quick move-in homes without finished photos
- Digital ads
- Email campaigns
- Social media
Representative images work. Buyers don't need to see the exact home; they want to see your product and the quality behind it. They want to picture themselves living there. Showing something is always better than showing nothing.
A Simple Test
Pull up your community pages and ask yourself: Would I be excited to live here based on these photos?
If the answer is no, your buyers probably feel the same way. Lead with your best, show the wow, and let everything else follow.
